Review: the EDC Tool System by OneUp Components

Have you ever had a mechanical on the trail and then realized you left your multi-tool at home? Or do you prefer to ride without a backpack, but you don’t want go without your tools? To answer these questions, OneUp Components has released their EDC Tool System, so that everything you need for trailside repairs is tucked away in your fork’s steerer tube.

Functions
The EDC Tool System’s multi-tool has hex keys from 2 - 8 mm, a Torx T25 key, a flat head screwdriver and the Top Cap tool to tighten the OneUp Components headset cap. Combining the Top Cap tool with the 5 mm hex key also gives you an 8 mm key. Included, is a tyre lever with a chain breaker for 10- / 11-speed chains. Integrated in the chain breaker are spoke key sizes 0-3.

Special features
Master links are also integrated into the plastic body where the multi-tool and tyre lever are attached to. The hollow cylinder at the bottom is the perfect place to stash small things like a patch kit, cable ties or money. The cylinder can also be replaced with a 12 g or 16 g CO2 cartridge. All of these tools are integrated in such a way that they do not make noise when slid into the steerer tube.
For those who don’t want to install the EDC Tool into their steerer tube, there is the mini-pump version, in either 100 cc or 70 cc volumes. The 100 cc version can fit the complete EDC Tool plus a CO2 cartridge and the 70 cc only fits one or the other.
Going hard with the EDC tool is no problem.

Testing the tool system
As soon as the EDC Tool System is locked into the steerer tube, it stays there without clanking around or making noise. It also doesn’t fall out and the included steerer tube plug keeps water from getting to the tool from the bottom.
Just by pulling, the entire tool can be removed from the steerer tube. The mini-tool is easy to work with and the tyre lever lets you reinstall a tyre, no problem. The chain breaker is very intuitive and simple. Overall, working with the tools on the trail is quick and comfortable.

Compatibility
OneUp has a few tricks to make sure your steerer tube is compatible. Below are some of the measurements you have to make before your purchase. Their Go, No Go tool, included in the Tap Kit can also be of help with trying to figure out if things fit.

- certain Fox 32
- Fox 34 29" 2012-2015
- Giant Overdrive 2
- Öhlins RXF
- SRAM Pike Boost as of 2016 and SRAM Lyrik Boost as 2016 might not have space for the CO2 cartridge
