Review: The new Ergon IP3 Solestar insoles, added stability for mountain bikers
MTB riders have different requirements than roadies when it comes to shoes. Nevertheless, the stabilising and supportive benefits are important for both!
I am an avid Enduro rider and I just swapped my old insoles for the new Ergon IP3 Solestars and was not disappointed. Even when you are completely happy about the position on your mountain bike and you feel comfortable during and after long rides, using insoles offers the benefits of added stability and misalignment prevention.

The case for insoles on the MTB
I am a strong believer in platform pedals and for Enduro riding I have to rely on stable footing. This is determined by three factors, the grip between shoe and pedal, a large contact area and a foot that is anchored well inside the shoe. It’s the latter where insoles come into play.
The Ergon IP3 Solestar on the trail
When slipping into my Five Tens fitted with the new insole, I immediately noticed the increased ankle support. My foot normally tends to pronate, meaning my ankle tends to tilt inward and the insoles immediately prevented this from happening. In addition, the insoles felt hard and stiff. This hardness should also improve power transfer.
It did take two longer rides to break the insoles in and get used to their stiffness. The permanent light pressure disappeared and my muscles got used to the new alignment in the neutral zero position provided by the insoles. The ribbed upper prevents the foot from sliding around inside the shoe, which feels great.
After this initiation period, the insoles became one with my Five Ten Shoes, offering a stable footing for whatever the trail throws at me. I can only recommend the Ergon IP3 Solestar insoles. Do yourself the favour and give them a try even if your alignment and position on the bike is comfortable. It can only improve.
