A ride around Lake Constance through three countries
Sabrina and Stefanie took a weekend and rode around the lake starting in Bregenz, Austria. Join the ride.
To get some training in while the weather was still good here in Germany, Stefanie and I decided to head down and take a ride around Lake Constance beginning in Bregenz, Austria. To get started, we booked our weekend trip with Roadbike Holidays (http://www.roadbike-holidays.com), one of our partners, and spent two wonderful nights in the Alpen Hotel Post.
I recently became a road bike nerd, but for Stefanie it would be the first time on one. Most often she can be found shredding trails on here Enduro rig, so this ended up being a nice change for her.
The Alpen Hotel Post
The four star hotel was absolutely amazing. The service was superb and they were always ready to help. The entire hotel is set up very comfortably and has the feeling of being a home away from home. It is also decked out with a bicycle storage and repair space as well as a pool and sauna. The rooms were top notch and the breakfast gave us the necessary energy for our ride. Overall, a wonderful hotel experience.
The tours
Before we arrived, we researched a few tours through Roadbike Holidays and loaded them on my GPS cycling computer. We both were surprised by the amount of tours there were, ranging from 30 km to 250 km with 450 m to 5000 m of climbing. Our hotel's location was the perfect starting point to hit both the low and fast routes as well as the alpine passes. The following table show the tours we researched beforehand.
Name | Distance (km) | Vertical Meters (m) | Difficulty |
---|---|---|---|
Einfahrtour auf die Schnepfegg | 30 | 452 | easy |
Bödele-Achrain | 90 | 1414 | medium |
Hochtannbergpass-Lech | 61 | 1315 | medium |
Lorenpass-Bildstein-Sulzberg | 125 | 2435 | medium |
Faschinajoch-Hochtannbergpass | 248 | 4942 | hard |
3 Pässe Tour | 107 | 2534 | hard |
Alpsee | 160 | 1992 | hard |
Our Lake Constance tour
After a nice night in the hotel, we packed up our bikes and headed to Bregenz to start our Lake Constance tour. We were happy to see upon arrival that the sun was shining and the water was sparkling.
The course was easy to follow with signs and arrows to keeps us on our track. We spent most of the time riding on asphalt, but there were some hard packed forest paths mixed in as well.
When we arrived in Meersburg, Germany, we took a ferry over to the city of Constance, on the boarder of Switzerland. Of course this was accompanied by a nice ice cream and a refreshing beverage.
From Constance we followed the shoreline back to Bregenz. We ended up riding 130 km and we were happy to have done it. With great views and weather, it was hard to wish for anything more.
Final thoughts
The road ride around Lake Constance was stunning. Stefanie and I were happy to be able to spend two nights in a wonderful hotel and have a ride that we won’t be forgetting anytime soon. The hotel's location was great for various tours like our lake route as well as mountainous climbs and descents. We will be back for more!
