Rohloff Disc Brake Adapter for 180 mm Rotors
Dissipate torque with Rohloff support adapters
With all gear hubs, the axle tries to rotate while you're riding. When riding in a lower gear (1-10), the axle wants to turn backwards. When riding in a higher gear (12-14), the axle wants to turn forwards. The torque with which the axle tries to turn is called the support torque. The size of the support torque depends on the load and the engaged gear, and must be absorbed by an appropriate anti-rotation device on the frame. With the simple three-speed hub, a flat-milled axle in the dropouts is sufficient. With a high-performance gear hub such as the Rohloff Speedhub 500/14, the support must be much more stable because of the large gear range.
To transfer the torque of the Speedhub to the frame, support adapters and a matching axle plate are required.

Technology:
Monkey BoneThe Monkey Bone is an adapter to transfer the support torque for the Rohloff Speedhub 500/14 directly to the frame. To use the Monkey Bone you need a Speedhub 500/14 equipped with an OEM2 axle plate (TS or CC), a frame with International Standard (IS) for disc brake mounting and a post mount disc brake caliper (PM). The Monkey Bone is not compatible with IS brake calipers (see Speedbone) or frames with integrated/direct post mount (see PM Bone).
The Monkey Bone (IS-PM adapter) is placed from the inside on the eyelets (on the seatstay) and screwed to the PM brake cylinder (follow the brake manufacturer's torque specifications). Not compatible if the eyelets are on the chainstay!
For a safe OEM2 installation with Rohloff Monkey Bone, the eyelets on the brake cylinder mount must be made in one piece with the dropout, comply with the international standard (IS 1999/2000) and the material thickness of the dropouts and eyelets must not be less than 6 mm.
The Monkey Bone must not be used (with CC/TS axle) on frames where the fixing point of the brake mount (IS 2000) is in front of the parallel/vertical line through the axle/dropout. In the lower/smaller gears of the Speedhub 500/14, very high forces (up to 98% of the force applied via the crank) act, which could potentially cause the axle to be rotated out of the dropout.
PM Bone
The Rohloff PM Axle Plate in combination with the PM Bone allows mounting on 135 mm, 142 mm, 148 mm, 170 mm or 177 mm frames with disc brake mount according to the post mount direct standard. Here the fixing points for the brake cylinder of post mount direct disc brake mount (either on the seatstay or chainstay) are used for torque support with the PM Bone. The Rohloff PM Bone must be mounted on the mounting points of the disc brake mount. This functions like an adapter and thus changes the required brake rotor size to a larger diameter. Mounting on 5" or 8" brake mounts is therefore not possible.
The following conditions must be met for the safe installation of the PM axle plate and PM Bone: the Rohloff PM axle plate must lie flat against the frame in the area of the axle plate (R20 / 40 mm) and must not collide with other frame parts (e.g. weld bead). Only then can the PM axle plate and PM Bone be installed without causing further issues.
It is also possible to mount it on frames with IS disc brake mounts on the chainstay. First, an IS-PM adapter is mounted to the mounting points of the IS disc brake mount. The Rohloff PM Bone can then be screwed onto this IS-PM adapter.
Caution:
- OEM2 mounting is only permitted on bicycle frames that have been approved for this purpose by the frame manufacturer. Without the approval of the frame manufacturer, the use of this mounting variant is done at the user's own risk.
- The use of the PM Bone as well as the PM axle plate has not been tested for tandem use and is therefore not approved for it!
