Shimano SH-GF800 with GORE-TEX® - high-performance all-weather shoes for flat pedals

The Shimano SH-GF800, GF8 for short, are waterproof platform pedal shoes for gravity use in wet, cold conditions. The built-in GORE-TEX membrane and a sock-like insert with elasticated ankle cuff keep your feet warm and dry. Equipped with a slightly harder Ultread GF outsole with water drainage channels, these shoes offer secure grip in low temperatures and thus support the control of the bike. A TORBAL 2.0 midsole plate, which is stiff in the centre and flexible on the sides, additionally improves feedback in high-speed descents and corners. The BOA L6 dial system is easily adjustable and secured with a plastic guard so that it does not loosen unintentionally when in contact with obstacles. The SH-GF800 are generously dimensioned in the toe and heel area, but close-fitting at the ball of the foot, which benefits power transmission. A multi-layer foam insole cushions impacts and contributes to more stability downhill with its flexibility. To protect your toes, a robust toe cap is used.

Technology:

Ultread GF
Outsoles with Ultread GF rubber compound and tread are optimised for gravity use with platform pedals. This compound is soft and durable and is slow to return to its original shape after deformation. Combined with the grippy hexagonal block pattern, it provides improved traction and constant contact with the pedal, even on rough surfaces. Shoes with Ultread GF therefore offer excellent pedal grip and support control over the bike.

TORBAL 2.0
The incorporated TORBAL 2.0 midsole plate is stiff but flexible on the sides. This improves control in fast descents and when cornering.

Overall I love these shoes. They are quite wide, warm enough and grip really well with my chester pedals. I cannot comment long term durability yet, but after test ride in snow these left positive impression. Cannot comment long term durability or waterproofness yet.

These aren’t the warmest winter shoes. I feel like these are only little bit warmer than shimano gr501 shoes. For me it’s just what I was looking for, but if you have tendency to suffer from cold feet, there are probably better options for cold winter weather. Insulation level is more like ”autumn shoe”. I have quite warm feet and I was able to ride these in -15 celcius with cheap battery warmed socks. I would say more generally speaking that these are good for temps ranging from 10 to -10 depending on your feet, but with warmed socks these work in colder conditions too.

The rubber compound of sole works really well in cold weather. I don’t have that much comparison, but these are much better shoes for riding in snow than gr501 flatpedal shoe or any regular shoe. Grip is amazing, five stars in that regard.

Only minus for me is that I have really high feet. These shoes are pain to put on because of that :D Otherwise I have no complaints about the shoes. They feel nice on the feet and fit is same as the other shimano shoes I have tested (gr501, some cheap SPD XC shoes). Shoehorn is a must if I try to put these on.

I would say that the price is kind of high compared to the product. These are great shoes, but 200 euros for these… It is a really high price. But if you want a flatpedal GTX shoe from shimano, you don’t have any other choices and if you choose these, you are probably going to enjoy them, if you like the shimano fit and accept that there isn’t that much insulation.

Time will tell, how these are going to last. I hope that these last longer than gr501 or otherwise my wallet will be unhappy :D
